Joshua Tree

I was at a dinner the other night and didn't realize that one of the women there was in her late 20's. I found out quickly when I mentioned how when I was 14 I spent the entire summer listening to The Joshua Tree album by U2.

She looked at me quizzically and said, "Who?"

Ohhh. We are not the same age, are we? Yes, that made me feel a bit old but it I also felt badly for her that she had not ever listened to one of the greatest albums EVER.

So I'm posting this here in case you've never heard it or needed a good reminder of some good music.

The entire album is AMAZING. It's awesome driving music, great break up music, great i'm in love music, great cheering up music.... It's just GREAT!

They've remastered the original and you can get it on amazon.com if you're interested. Or download it from iTunes. You can't lose either way.

So if you're on a street with no name, and you haven't found what you're looking for or if you're running to stand still ... remember this is God's country! Wow. I love this music!!

Enjoy!

My favorite facial cleansers

Trader Joe's Jojoba Oil

After years of being in direct competition with the country of Kuwait to see who has more oil - them or my face -- Kuwait has finally taken the lead! It's only taken them 25 years to beat my oily face out of the competition. One would think that at 40 years old I'd  be buying "aging" creams. But no I am still spotting a greasy face by 3 pm. So while that bodes well for less wrinkles (not that I'm not getting some!) it really doesn't bode well for acne. Yes. Acne at 40 is the bomb! Not!

Sigh.
Trader Joe's Natural Facial Cleansins Pads with Tea Tree Oil
So how did Kuwait finally beat me out? After years of spending big bucks on every type of cleanser out there - in a hasty mad rush to the store one day - I discovered Trader Joe's facial cleansing pads. It was on a whim and one of those "I'll try anything to fight this stupid acne" approaches and this time it really worked!!!

Here's the dealio, though. Those pads can be too drying for my face. 20 years ago - I don't think so. But since some of the aging process has calmed down my grease production some I can't just use these cleansing pads alone every day.

That is when I discovered the Jojoba Oil for my face as well. Who knew that cleaning oil with oil really does work?! I mean I had heard of that working before. And in my 20's I did try it to see if it'd work for me, but no luck. But now that I'm not the ultimate oil producer (thanks Kuwait!) the oil is really working for me AND my wrinkles!!!

Depending on my makeup level and grease level I either use the Jojoba alone (put a little on a cotton ball and wipe face down) OR I'll use the cleansing pads and then the Jojoba.

Oh, and I guess I should I also mention that for my birthday a few years ago I bought this beauty for my oilyness:
The fabulous Clarisonic facial cleansing brush. I had a facial in Hawaii and my facialist used this on me and suggested that I buy one as well. It took me 6 months to do it (I hate spending a lot of money on something that really doesn't work). But I tell you - this thing works!!!

I bought it at Nordstrom but you can also order it online as well. The woman there, though, suggested that I also by Philosophy's Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash to go with it. I swear that between doing that in the shower in the morning and my nighttime Trader Joe's routine that my face has turned a MAJOR corner!

So if you're having oil field issues on your face -- hopefully these suggestions will you help you as well. It took me 25 years to get this under control and I'm telling you IT'S AMAZING!!

Enjoy!!!

I'm smitten with Smitten Kitchen

I can't remember if I've ever posted one of  my favorite food blogs. If I have and you happen to know this... my apologies. But even so - look at this here cake!

Bee Sting Cake by Smitten Kitchen
I'll admit that I haven't been following her as much ever since she got way too busy and very popular on the talk shows. But here recipes are tried and true. I haven't made a bad one yet. But I just love how she makes things that are so everyday normal and tweaks them to perfection. AND AND AND also makes the different recipes out there and makes them more accessible to everyone else.

Take for example her post for today -- Bee Sting Cake. It's a German cake that her mother loved as a little girl. I loved that she kept trying for perfection (FIVE TIMES to get it right!) and that she doesn't quit. It's so nice to see nowadays. It's impressive.

So if you're a little late to the game about this food blog - never fear. I'm here to share.

If you already know about Deb and Smitten Kitchen then you too know how divine it is already!

Hope you enjoy!

Candied Almonds

Williams-Sonoma Medici Almonds
My grandfather was a lover of all things related to candy or nuts.  And candied almonds were his nirvana - the BEST of both worlds. I must agree as well. There is something so satisfying biting into the hard, yet sweet, outer shell and into the loveliest almond. YUM.

We used to find glass jars filled with these nuts - hidden behind other jars of candy, hidden downstairs in the basement where my grandmother never went. I remember sitting next to him on his couch, or on the pew at church and having his big hand of his sneak a little candy-covered nut into my little hand. His eyes twinkling, but his face not giving it away that he was sneaking me a little treat before lunch or dinner. Looking back I'm sure my parents knew. How could they not? It's not like you could be quiet chomping on this in church! LOL. Ohhh the good memories I have of my grandfather. I miss him dearly.

When I was much older and living away I would come visit him at his house and he'd always offer me some candied almonds while we visited together. After my grandmother passed away he was much more open with his love for candy, although, he still kept it hid from public view. I think that was mainly to appease my mother. She and her mother used to tsk tsk at his candy / nut loving ways. But guess what? He lived to the ripe old age of 89 -- just shy of his 90th birthday. So it's hard to say who was right about his eating habits. Sure, he could have lost some weight around the middle (who can't?) but he was happy. Always whistling while he worked, buying candy from locals and sharing them with whomever he met on the street.

He was a general surgeon and doctor to many, many people. I remember sleeping over at their house when I was little and being awoken in the middle of the night from the phone ringing. He took calls from patients 24/7. He always had his black bag in the back of his car and was prepared for whatever came his way. And you know what he also had in the back of his trunk? Candied almonds!

Williams-Sonoma gives us a little history lesson with these nuts on their website stating,  "Glazed almonds were first served at lavish feasts in ancient Greece, and sugared almonds dazzled guests at the wedding feast of Catherine de’ Medici and the future King Henry II of France in 1533."

Who knew? All I know is that they're delicious and without any real testing or proof - I think they kept my grandfather alive for almost 90 years!

I love you grandpapa!

Enjoy!

P.S. Williams-Sonoma is sold out of their Medicis Almonds. But never fear. You can buy Jordan Almonds on Amazon all year long. Woohoo!

Spotbot - Best Invention EVER!

I love this little machine.
www.amazon.com
The Bissell Spotbot is the best cleaning invention ever.

It cleans spots on your carpet that get stained. I saw this first on the Ellen Show YEARS ago and thought that it is a great invention. So I bought it myself. I have used it constantly. It cleans up spilled drinks, barf, poop, pen, marker, and pink goop from a plastic toy (don't ask). Does it get everything out? No. But nothing does that I know of at this moment. It does, though, really deep clean your carpet or rugs.

Today, for example, I grabbed it out of the closet to clean up a leaky diaper mess all over the bedroom rug. I ended up finding all sorts of small stains that I "botted" out. It was amazing. I got the poop all cleaned up and no one would ever know that it had been all over the rug. Woo hooo!!!

I love the "walk-away" feature as well as the manual feature. If the stain is more set I highly recommend the walk-away feature. It scrubs that part of your carpet for a good while. I sometimes after will then use the manual feature too.

The manual feature was my best friend today. I had small stains around the rug that needed to be cleaned asap. It was a "fresh" stain so I didn't need the major scrubber. I spent about 15 minutes cleaning the rug and now it looks sooo good.

I love this little machine. And no, I do not work for Bissell or get anything from saying great things about it. But I thought I'd share anyway. If you kids or pets this is a lifesaver!! Highly recommend it!

Hope you enjoy!

Favorite Flower of the Moment

Ahhh the lovely Tuberose (pronounced TO-ber-oze, not tube-rose). I went to the Santa Monica Farmer's Market on Wednesday and kept smelling the most delicious scent. It reminded me of Gardenias, but they were no where to be found.
www.caladiumbulbs.com

Finally, I stopped by the flower stall and asked them what was that most delicious scent I kept smelling?! The man immediately knew what I was after and waved me towards the tuberoses. Seriously, I could not believe it. They looked so ... well, boring. Who knew that they could give such a beautiful gift for days to come?!
This is a Gardenia. It's not a bulb as the tuberose is but a bush. They also smell wonderful.

So I bought some. They were worth every penny. I put them on the dining room table and I'm greeted with the most wonderful scent each time I enter the house, sit at the computer, watch the TV or walk to the bedrooms.

They are in bloom in late summer. So if you haven't had the time to pick some up at the market -- I highly recommend it. I'm going back on Wednesday to buy a LOT more!!

Enjoy!

No More Brown, Boring Towels

I just couldn't take it one more day. I had old, scratchy, non-fluffy towels and it drove me crazy. I love fluffy soft towels. They make the day so much brighter.

But, as you might know or guess, I'm not a big spender on things, especially things that will wear out soon or get ruined by the kiddos.

So this was a splurge, but a might fine splurge. I gave away my very BORING, very safe, BROWN towels. I got them for my wedding over 11 yrs ago. They had a fine life with me but it was time for them to go. They were bleached in areas, scratchy and had seen better days.

I replaced them with very soft and very fun towels from Garnet Hill.

Here are the ones that I ordered:
A few of these...

Garnet Hill Regatta Stripe Towels
and a few of these...
Garnet Hill Dot to Dot Towels
and a few of these...
Garnet Hill Damask Towels

and I love them all! My hubby is not quite sure how he feels about all of the colors, stripes and polka-dots but I'm sure he'll come around. My thought is that since we don't have a master bath in this house and it's shared by all why not make it a fun place to be for all of us. I'm tired of brown and boring towels. I want something fun and uplifting to greet me each time I visit the loo.

And these towels from Garnet Hill definitely uplift me as I grudgingly leave my bed each morning to get the kiddos going for school.

Hope you enjoy!

The amazing and wonderful drug called Arnica!

Arnica Gel Twin Pack from drugstore.com
I have found that a lot of people do not know about this miracle wonder drug called Arnica. It's AMAZING. And it's not really a drug, but more a herb that has been formulated into gels, lotions and capsules. It helps when you have a sprain, a bruise and/or muscle soreness. (Some people swear by it for their arthritis, but since I don't have that problem yet, I cannot attest to it).

I use it when my bebe's fall and hit their head -- rub the Arnica on the spot and the bruising is minimal and hardly any, if any at all, swelling. This is a godsend when you have toddlers learning to walk, ride a bike or a scooter. They fall and you put Arnica on the spot and poof! Boo-boo all gone! I use it for sore muscles after exercising and we have used it for broken fingers and toes.

We first learned of Arnica when my husband broke two of his fingers playing basketball right before we went on a trip to Mexico. His entire hand swelled up and he was in a ton of pain. The doctor didn't do much more than tape his fingers together and give him some Ibuprofen for the pain. My neighbor, who is from Guatemala, suggested that we put Arnica on his fingers to reduce the swelling and the pain. We were very skeptical, but decided to try it anyway. It was like magic! His fingers almost immediately reduced in size, which in turn, reduced his pain. We were hooked!

The next time we used it was after our then 4 yr old bonked his head HARD on his new bed frame. Pottery Barn used to sell this cute looking bed frame that had low head and foot boards - you could sleep at either end or use it as a day bed. They stopped making it and I'm sure it's because so many kids bonked their heads on the headboard as they lay down to sleep. He hit his head so hard that it was indented where he hit it. I immediately grabbed the arnica and rubbed it in A LOT. There was no goose egg (nor did he have a concussion) and barely a bruise when we got up the next morning. A miracle cure!

When a friend sprained her calf muscle she was given arnica tablets to ingest as well as the gel to rub on her leg. It helped her as well.

I could keep going but I'll stop. But I wanted to share another of my most favorite things in the world. If you don't have Arnica as part of your first aid kit I highly recommend that you add it - quickly! It's amazing. That said, I don't recommend just using this and skipping the doctor's office for more serious bumps and bruises. But if you bump into your desk often and give yourself a nice bruise on your thigh -- arnica will help you. Don't ask how I know this one.... :)

Oh, and one more thing, you need to use it soon after you first bruise for this to really work well. The longer you wait to use it (I'm talking days here, not minutes) the better it will work on your bruise. My neighbor just borrowed my Arnica gel for her daughter who hit her head on the pool swimming. She had a huge goose egg growing on her forehead right before our eyes. We were at a pool party and after we all got home later that evening I ran over my tube of Arnica (she didn't know about it either) and told her to rub it on her goose egg. Well, she told me just today how helpful that was and how her goose egg is barely even there now.

I'm telling you - I have a bunch of these examples. I'll really stop now. Seriously. But I just LOVE it and I want to share it with the world! Ha...ha!

Hope you enjoy.

Okay, so lately I'm obsessed with blogs that have to do with learning and education. I find it fascinating all the different ways there are to learn. I love learning new ways to teach my kiddos about a subject.

My last post was about spelling and Charlotte's Web. Loved it. (Although, I can't get my kids to do the spelling part much - but that's okay.) We did read the entire book and then we watched the movie for Family Movie Night. My kids enjoyed that a lot, as did I. My daughter, however, wants us to redo the ending of the book and make it a happier ending so I guess that is our next project. Lol.

Today, however, I came upon this post from Not Just Cute (a really great blog about early learners, btw). I really appreciated it. As someone who hears a lot about how people don't like flashcards, but not ever hearing a different way to teach it instead, I appreciate how she lists different ways to teach your children colors, counting and sight words without using flashcards.

Here is the link - http://notjustcute.com/2012/07/11/do-you-use-flashcards/#

And even better she mentions one of my favorite children songs by Hap Palmer, "Marching Around the Alphabet." If you haven't heard of Hap Palmer you are missing out! He's the greatest. My older kiddos have loved his dvd's and songs AND now my bebe loves him too! I am constantly singing "I can put my clothes on by myself" while my kids get dressed (and not - it kinda sticks in my head for days sometimes, but that's another post). I love love love his song, "What A Miracle." It's so sweet. I found this YouTube video, but it's not the same as what you find on the DVD. However, it's such a sweet song that I want to share it with you all.

Hap Palmer DVD - I've had to buy two copies now since we wore the first one out!
Lately, I feel like I'm learning so much about learning that it's crazy. I am considering going back to school to get my masters in education so that I can really study teaching and learning. But we'll see. Now that I have an almost 1 yr old plus two older -- my time has become very limited. Maybe in a few more years. Until then I'm learning from reading blogs from retired teachers turned full time moms turned full time bloggers. Lucky me!

Hope you all enjoy!

Creekside Learning Blog

I just found this blog (by trolling around other blogs, of course) and saw this great idea for learning new spelling words all while enjoying Charlotte's Web.

Such a cute idea that I just had to share with all of you.

One of the best books ever!
Spelling activities to go along with the book (pic by Creekside Learning)
Here's what she wrote:

Spelling and Vocabulary.  I found Charlotte’s Web to be a great story for my new reader (Firefly) and my blossoming reader (The Queen Bee).  In the story, Charlotte is looking for new words to spell in her web, so I came up with this fun activity for the kids.
I drew simple spider webs with white pencil onto dark colored paper using this tutorial  and  had the kids spell out all of the words that Charlotte spins in her web. They began by sounding out the words on their own first, then by copying the corrected versions.

Go to the county fair. Our county has one coming up in a couple of weeks. We hope to see the animals and will be on the lookout for the blue ribbon winners, just like the ribbon Wilbur hoped to win in Charlotte’s Web.

I just love this idea to help the kiddos learn how to read and spell new words. I feel like I could this with my 2nd graders spelling list as well as my kinder's sight words.

Hurrah! Love fun learning ideas. I can't wait to incorporate this into our daily living.

Hope you enjoy.

I think this is such a super fun way to use old rice AND to make a very fun sensory box for the kiddos.

Happy Hooligans has two posts about it.

First, is how to make the colored rice and then second is what she did with it afterward.

As a non-crafty, but craft lover, mom I appreciate all of this wonderful help. I'm going to go order on amazon.com right now the Wilton icing gel.

Oh, speaking of which, a new favorite thing of mine is to order any cooking/baking items from amazon.com. SERIOUSLY affordable, people. I just ordered 16 premium Madagascar-Bourbon vanilla bean pods for UNDER $10. HELLO.

So that's two great finds that I'm sharing with you all tonight.

Hope you enjoy!
